Practical introduction to shooting black and white images

Black and white photography is making a big comeback, thanks to digital cameras and their ability to shoot straight into black and white. Today it is possible to easily and simply produce stunning black and white images with all the quality and flair of what was produced in the heyday of black and white photography.

There is however an art to seeing and creating black and white images. Images that are stunning in colour often do not work and the understanding of the conversion process and how the key elements in images work is vital to producing successful black and white photographs. On this event we look at the best options on the camera and get you looking for all the things in the practical section of the event that go to making up great black and white images.

Syon House offers many striking subjects to photograph in black and white and as we are running the event on a day when Syon House is closed to the public so we have facilities to use some of the state rooms, the conservatory and the gardens for photography.

Equipment requirements

Any EOS camera with zoom lenses with focal lengths between 18mm through to 200mm is required for this event. You must have one of the following Digital EOS cameras which can shoot directly into black and white as this is how all images will be originated on the day. EOS 350D, 400D, 450D, 1000D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 5D, 5D mark II, 1D Mark II N, 1D mark III or 1DS Mark III.
